043 – Fireside Chat: Become a Better Manager, Clean the Slate!
Subscribe and Listen to the Your Best Manager Podcast!
If you do this right, it will transform your week (and I’m expecting this to transform my week as well)!
Do you ever wish you could just start over? Clean the slate or turn back time and just, do things differently?
There are times where I feel that way. Usually after learning something new. All of a sudden I realize that I’ve been doing things wrong or that I’ve been missing things that are now clear and obvious.
It’s discouraging for sure, but this type of thinking can also be damaging.
Damaging, unless you do two things:
First of all, you need to recognize that the decisions you made in the past weren’t based on the knowledge and experience that you now have. I have to remind myself of this on a daily basis; I’m not perfect and the decisions I make today are based on what I know today…. not what I’ll know in 2 months.
Secondly, you need to take action. And that action doesn’t just involve change – it requires acknowledgment (sometimes publicly).
That’s what I mean when I say that if you do this right, it will transform your week (and hopefully mine as well)!
When we recognize a change that we need to make, it’s so tempting to just try acting differently without properly addressing the change with the people who are impacted by our change.
I’m talking about leadership and I’m talking about the dangers of having a “flavor of the week” management style. Worse than this, I’m talking about how leaders become well-intentioned hypocrites.
Here’s a quick example. You decide that you need to build relationships with your staff so you start asking new questions, spending more time with them or asking for their opinion more frequently.
You feel like a growing leader, but your employees are skeptical because they remember how you treated them last week. You feel like you’re making progress, but your employees feel like this change will be short lived.
Don’t you wish you could just clean the slate and start over?
So are you ready for you Monday morning management tip? (and yes, this is new… I’ll explain in a moment)
Clean the Slate!
Here’s how: Take an extra 5 minutes during your Monday morning team meeting (or your Friday wrap-up team meeting) to share something that you are working on to become a better leader.
It doesn’t have to be complicated and it shouldn’t be earth shattering. Just take a little bit of time to tell your staff about an area of your leadership that you want to improve.
- Tell them what weakness you have uncovered in your leadership or business (address the problem).
- Share how you plan to improve in that area (Identify the change(s) they should see).
- Explain why this change or improvement is important to you (Make it about serving them)
- Ask for patience and accountability (Create an environment that welcomes feedback)
I’ll say it again, if you do this right, it will transform your week.
And I’m going to put this into practice for myself right now. Because there are a few changes I’d like to make myself and that I want to share with you.
I released episode 43 today on the Your Best Manager podcast as a “fireside chat”. After 42 episodes, I thought it would be nice to share a few things with you that I am working on as I seek to provide as much value as I possibly can.
You’ll have to listen to the episode (player above) to grab the details, but here are a few bullet points of what I cover during today’s 27-minute episode:
- Enrollment in The Partnership is closed and the program is on hold (and why)
- My vision for the Podcast, my email newsletter, and my private Facebook group
- The overall message and purpose of Your Best Manager (probably the most important piece of the conversation today)
- Further instruction and explanation of today’s Manager tip (Clean The Slate)
